Start with generated OHLCV data or an imported CSV. Train a boosted tree or ridge baseline on the same features. Then check chronology, baseline strength, threshold calibration, transaction costs, and slippage before you trust the edge.
A boosted tree looks clever beside nothing. Put a linear or ridge baseline next to it and the signal has to earn its keep.
The model retrains as time moves forward. That is where random splits lie and a lot of paper edge disappears.
Transaction costs and slippage are not footnotes. They are often the reason a backtest works on paper and fails live.
Signal strength is useless if the cutoff is guessed after the fact. Quantfoo calibrates the threshold against trade frequency.
Questions it answers
The point is not to make a model look good. The point is to find out whether the idea survives the first real questions.
